Environmental Manager
The Environmental Manager will lead the development, implementation, and continual improvement of the company’s environmental management systems, ensuring compliance with all environmental legislation and standards. The role will champion environmental best practice, sustainability initiatives, and drive measurable improvements across operational sites, supporting both compliance and the company’s wider ESG ambitions.
Key Responsibilities – Environmental Management & Compliance
- Develop, manage, and maintain environmental policies, procedures, and systems in line with ISO 14001 and legal obligations.
- Ensure full environmental compliance across sites, preparing for, leading, and supporting site audits and inspections.
- Keep abreast of current and impending environmental legislation, recommending actions to ensure ongoing compliance.
- Oversee the implementation and monitoring of permits, licences, and consents required for company operations.
Sustainability Strategy & Continuous Improvement
- Lead the company’s sustainability agenda, collaborating with cross-functional teams to reduce environmental impact.
- Identify, develop, and deliver initiatives focused on energy reduction, waste minimisation, resource efficiency, and carbon footprint measurement.
- Drive continual improvement projects for environmental performance and embed proactive environmental practices.
- Contribute to the development and delivery of company environmental targets, policies, and annual sustainability reporting.
Training, Engagement & Advocacy
- Develop and deliver environmental awareness training to colleagues at all organisational levels.
- Promote a culture of environmental responsibility by engaging teams through campaigns, communication, and participation in initiatives.
- Act as the key contact for environmental issues, investigations, or incidents, and lead root cause analysis where required.
- Represent the company externally on environmental topics when required.
Reporting, Analysis & Documentation
- Monitor, track, and report on environmental metrics (including energy, waste, water, emissions, and compliance records).
- Maintain comprehensive environmental documentation and records in line with legal and ISO requirements.
- Support the submission of regulatory returns such as packaging waste, greenhouse gas emissions, and related reporting schemes.
Skills & Competencies – Environmental Management
- In-depth understanding of environmental legislation, ISO 14001, and sustainability best practice.
- Strong project management and analytical skills with the ability to interpret data and drive improvements.
- Excellent communication skills for stakeholder engagement, training delivery, and environmental advocacy.
- Highly organised, detail-focused, and able to prioritise in a fast-paced environment.
- A proactive approach with the confidence to challenge existing processes and deliver change.
- Strong IT skills, including competency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and environmental management systems.
Qualifications & Experience – Environmental Sector
- Degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, or a related discipline (or equivalent industry experience).
- Practical experience managing environmental compliance, systems, or sustainability programmes (ideally within manufacturing, FMCG, or logistics).
- Track record of delivering environmental improvements and successful project management.
- ISO 14001 lead auditor or internal auditor qualification desirable.
- Experience in policy creation, incident investigation, and supporting corporate sustainability goals preferred.
